Problem gamblers aren't the only ones affected
Family, friends and co-workers also suffer. And, these concerned others also go through predictable phases as the problem worsens -- periods of resentment, self-doubt, denial and isolation. They often bail out the gambler. This only worsens the problem. In many cases, family and friends are forced to terminate their relationships with problem gamblers -- in order to save themselves.
But there is help and hope.
There is help for concerned others
The Iowa Gambling Treatment Program helps problem gamblers and concerned others. Counseling provides direction on what family and friends should and shouldnít do to help themselves.
They learn it may be necessary to
- take control of their own lives;
- confront and cease enabling behaviors;
- restore normal life routines;
- reinforce appropriate actions for recovery;
- distance themselves from the problem behavior;
- not blame themselves for the problem, but to take responsibility for their own lives.
